Teen Job Q&A

Teen Job Questions
If you are 16 years old and older, you might be ready to look for your first job. Understandably, you have questions. You may not know where to start. Here are some questions teens are asking.

What are teen related jobs?

A teen can work as a waiter, waitress, in a retail store, convenience, store, drug store, nursing homes, pizza place, ski instructing, painter’s helper, babysitting, a computer store, a game store, movie theaters, fast food restaurants, grocery stores, hauling garbage, and paper routes.
Jobs for businesses usually ask that teens are 16 years old and older. For a list of how old you have to be, see this.

What are some high paying jobs for teens?

Waiting on tables pays low hourly rates, but the tips can be good. Ask around. Some say you can make good income life guarding. Babysitting isn’t bad either. You can make around $6/hr. and the hours add up. If you know anyone who runs an office, you might be able to get something like an administrative or receptionist position. Because you are an inexperienced teen, you might have to accept minimum wage. The experience you earn and the references you gather are invaluable.

APPLY TO JOBS
What are some good summer jobs?

Life Guard, camp counseling, and amusement park attendants are classic summer jobs. Basically any business that makes most of their money in the summer, such as golf courses, motels, resorts, museums, ice cream shops, fairs, farms, and water parks are the places to apply for work.

What paperwork do I need to start working at 16?

You need a worker’s permit. You can get one from your high school nurse or guidance counselor. You should know your social security number and put together a resume.

Places teens are working are Subway, Hollister, AT&T, Ruby Tuesday, Dairy Queen, Burger King, Whataburger, Target, Chik-Fil-A, Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, Walmart, YouTube, Jamba Juice, Best Buy, and Forever 21.
You can see that teens are finding jobs with family, at local shops and with big name store brands. They are also creating their own jobs such as making music, designing apps or fixing computers. I say all this to point out that you shouldn’t give up on finding a great summer or after-school part time job. My motto is if someone else can do it, so can I.

What if I am under 16 years old?

Fourteen and fifteen year olds can earn pocket money too. If you have anything to sell, sell it. This could be things like used clothes to a thrift store, things you craft, used video games and players and used cell phones.

Odd jobs are another way to earn cash. Homeowners and parents can be desperate for help with gardening, dog walking, car washing, painting, garbage or clutter removal, wrapping gifts, putting up Christmas lights and decorations, cleaning their home, watching their kids and watching the dog while they go on vacation. You just have to get up the courage to talk to neighbors and relatives and let them know what you can do. Put flyers in mailboxes. If there is a senior community nearby, offer to do odd jobs for them.
