Part Time Jobs for Teens

PART TIME JOBS

Part Time Jobs
Due to the economy, workers employed part time are on the rise. The U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics reported that in November 2008, 7.3 million persons were employed part time for economic reasons, an increase of 3.4 million from April 2006. These are employees that wanted to work full time but who were unable to find full time positions due to unfavorable business conditions.  Part time job vacancies became available from the construction, retail, and food services industries.

Part time openings are often filled by teens, moms, retirees and displaced full time workers. One popular job that pays well is that of school bus driver.  Of course if you are a teen, this won't work for you.  However, if you are old enough to drive, try delivery driving jobs for restaurants. Other part-time jobs that pop up often are listings for tutors.  This job also pays well and can be performed in the evenings, weekends and during the summer. More titles to look into include assistant librarian, home care aide, carpenter, crew member, maintenance worker, inventory taker, teacher aide, babysitter, nanny, housekeeper and sales associate.

When you are looking for part time jobs online, remember to also search for alternate terms such as "2nd shift", "3rd shift", "temporary", "contract", "seasonal", "holiday", and "hourly".  You can also search by job title and by company. Additionally because part time jobs are less than 40 hours, you can search for the term "20 hours".  If you are a teen, sometimes putting the search keyword in as "16 years old" can yield good results. Peruse our website for job listings for 14, 15, 16 17, and 18 year old teens.  If you are an adult, the information is still useful to your finding a part time position in your town.

Part time jobs do not include benefits often, however, they are great for 16 year olds and teens of all ages because they can be performed after school, as summer jobs and on weekends.   Almost every industry needs part timers for weekend, 2nd shift jobs, 3rd shift, temporary jobs and contract jobs.  Common positions are in retail, fast food, camps, hotels, family dining restaurants, ice cream shops, movie theaters, bowling alleys, and babysitting opportunities.

Take a look at listings for part-time employment.  This is the best way to determine your action plan in finding work.  See who you want to work for, what qualifications they are seeking, and learn about the company before you apply.  See if there is more than one location that a business is hiring for.  If you don't get hired in one place, take what you have learned and apply to the next location. Apply to stores that you frequent.  Get to know managers and decision makers. Your connections will put you one step ahead in finding work.  Below is a summary of some of the employers who are looking to fill part-time vacancies.

Mall Jobs

If you are searching for part time mall jobs, you can apply to work for the mall itself, or for the stores inside. Opportunities are available in guest services, optometry, smoothie stands, optical stores, Easter Bunny photo booth, and beauty stores. You can apply online, or go to individual stores and obtain applications. There are hundreds of stores to choose from including Apple, Aldo, A/X Armani Exchange, Coach, Hot Topic, Bath and Body Works, Chili's, Five Guys, Lens Crafters, Staples, T-Mobile, Petco, The Children's Place, Nine West, Pac Sun, M.A.C., Sephora, Victoria's Secret, Nordstrom, Forever 21, Macy's and Sears. JC Penney has opportunities for a Customer Service Associate, Dispatcher, Salon Stylist, Decorator Consultant, Department Supervisor, Commission Sales, Installer, and Loss Prevention Associate. Target also needs a part time merchandiser. Besides clothing shops, there are many different restaurants. Starbucks needs a Barista and Shift Supervisor.

You are sure to find mall jobs easily. Most of these companies have websites. Go to their websites to search and apply to positions. For instance, the Forever 21 website shows that they are looking for a co-manager. If you don't see a website application, go to the store. For example, Sephora states that they prefer if you see the store manager for a job.

To fill out an application, apply through our job listings, go to the mall and ask for one at the store of your choice, or go to the store's website and apply.  These shopping center jobs are great for extra income and for flexible hours.  If you need a part time job, it is especially advantageous to look for a position close to a holiday.  Retail stores and restaurants often add to their staff in anticipation of increased sales. Start your search now to find a summer job, a night job, and jobs for 16, 17, 18 and 19 year olds.

Part Time Jobs With Benefits

When searching part time job vacancies, be selective; choose jobs with benefits! Benefits can be employee discounts, health insurance, easy work, good hours, and free tuition.

Employee discounts can mean thousands of savings to you. Some companies are more generous than others but don't necessarily brag about it, because it would allow customers to compare what they are paying. A quick way to find out what employers are offering is to read job forums. Names that have been mentioned for good discounts are Aeropostale, Aveda, Godiva, Barnes and Noble, The Container Store, J. Crew, Fashion Bug, Starbucks, Wolfgang Puck, Movie Gallery, Outback Steakhouse, Neiman Marcus, Tommy Hilfiger Outlets, Vail Resorts, Verizon Wireless, US Cellular, and Gap, Inc. These companies offer not only percentage discounts off of merchandise, but free food, free ski tickets, discounted phone service and low priced hotel rooms.

When reading about part time job vacancies, easy work and good hours can be beneficial. Think about if the work is something you can physically do. Will you be able to stand for hours at a register? Does the job require constant reorganizing of merchandise? Is the work schedule steady, or do the hours constantly change? Do you have to stay up overnight? There are easier part time jobs. For instance, night stocking jobs are quiet and you can work at your own pace. If you have accounting or clerical skills, consider working for a seasonal tax preparation office, or as a receptionist. Another alternative is working in childcare or education as a teacher's assistant, aide, or tutor.

A highly sought after necessity is health insurance. Most companies offering benefits require a minimum of hours being worked and a probation period before benefits will begin. UPS, Lands' End, Barnes and Noble and Whole Foods are some examples of employers who provide this perk. Search the career section of company websites to find out what their policy is on benefits. Depending on the state, some part time civil service jobs come with health, life, retirement and dental insurance. In New York State, for instance, a developmental aide trainee working 20 hours receives full benefits. Some federal agencies also offer benefits to part timers. Other jobs that are unionized offer health insurance as well. In addition, there are school bus driving positions that come with full benefits.

Vacancies at colleges and universities sometimes extend free tuition to employees and their families. This is called tuition remission. New Jersey Institute of Technology provides tuition assistance to employees enrolled in qualified programs.

As you can see, it is not necessary to give up on obtaining benefits when searching part time job vacancies. There are many socially responsible companies who try to respect employees as valuable assets. You will find them if you look.

Restaurant Jobs

Restaurants will usually accept applications from teens. This is because they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and have a need for unskilled labor. Teens can wash dishes, bus tables, operate the cash register, and serve food. There are some dining establishments that are looking for help right now. These include Kangaroo Express, Fuddruckers, Firehouse Subs, Steak N Shake,  KFC, McDonalds, ca Golden Corral, and Pizza Hut. Job titles  with openings are Cooks, Prep, Butcher, Baker, Guest Associate, Line, Server, and Team Member.

Part time jobs have varying hours and shifts.  Some allow you to work mornings, some evenings, some on the weekends and some overnight.  Shift work enables the employer to avoid paying for healthcare and for other full time benefits.  Employees often have to work more than one job to put together a full time income.  The good news is that night and weekend work can often lead to 40 hr a week opportunities.  They also give the employee a taste of different job titles and enable the worker to become a jack of all trades.

Jobs in larger cities are so sought after that there are hundreds of people searching for them everyday.  Some of the ways that you can earn an advantage are to visit job fairs, network online via social sharing, sign up with a temporary agency, and use your college career center.  Comment on employer websites if they have a blog.  Let people know how knowledgeable you are.  They might recruit you! If you are still in high school, let your guidance counselor know you are looking.
