Most college students find it necessary to work to have money to live on while in college. They need jobs that are flexible, are applicable to their career path and that pay well. There are some tried and tested jobs that students have done and continue to do. Here a few jobs for college students.

Tutoring: If you are particularly good in a certain subject, advertise your availability to tutor in school newspapers and on social media. You can also apply to tutor with an agency such as Wyzant Tutoring.

Bartending: There are a lot of advantages to college students who bartend. Bartenders are able to work flexible hours and typically earn well with tips. These jobs are available in a number of places such as resorts, restaurants, airports, hotels and clubs. When you have exams, many times, you can switch shifts with other bartenders. Every night you walk out the door with cash in hand. Finally, you are out in the world meeting people. Some of these people might be able to help you further your career.

Online jobs:  There are opportunities for students who are familiar with graphic design, social media, and writing. Graphic designers can prepare e book covers, illustrations, logos, and banners. Writers can make money selling articles or managing social media pages for small businesses. There are some who earn advertising money by creating and posting viral videos. The key is to accumulate very large followings on websites such as Vine, YouTube, Snapchat and Instagram. Someone interested in earning online should look into micro job sites such as Elance, Fiverr, and the Warrior Forum. For those who have time to invest in learning internet marketing, affiliate marketing can also be lucrative.

Jobs on Campus: Working on campus, if you can, is a great idea. The job is close by, you do not need transportation, and you already have your foot in the door. There are positions in the cafeterias, gym, library, coffee café, research, campus tours, pool safety, admissions, or as a resident advisor.

Seasonal jobs: In the summer, check with golf courses, landscapers, ice cream shops, camps and amusement parks for summer job openings. In the winter, you can shovel snow.

Resident assistants: Nursing homes employee aids to help with the elderly and disabled.

Internships and campus recruiting: Make use of the resources provided by your college.  Make an appointment with career services. Your school has connections with employers in the community. Attend career fairs, on campus recruiting, and learn about internship opportunities. Some universities offer a scholarship to those who intern. Many employers complain that applicants do not have work experience. Internships will provide this experience

Retail: Stores are always in need of sales associates, especially during the holidays. Go to clothing, gift, electronics, card, book and department stores and pick up an application. You can also go online to the company’s website and apply.

Restaurants: Apply to be a server, cashier, busser, dishwasher and host.

Babysitting: This job can be great for a college student. If you work at night, you can study after the kids are in bed.

Work Study: There is a Federal program that helps students obtain work if they meet certain income levels.

Multi-level marketing: Become a salesperson for a direct sales company such as Avon, Mary Kay or Amway.

As you can see, there are many ways to earn part time income. The best way is to spend time in the industry in which your ultimate career will be, however, any work is an opportunity that will provide you with skills that you can put on your resume. Even a fast food worker can say that he or she has experience working within a team, and has excellent customer service skills.

Search our job board for part time jobs. Be ready to tell an employer the exact days and hours you are available. Have a resume ready, even if it is a summer job to which you are applying.
