How to Avoid a Desk Job
In an era of information technology, desk jobs have increased. An office job comes with a nice environment, stability, safety, and a clear path to promotion. However, having a lucrative career does not require you to sit at a desk taking phone calls, shuffling papers and typing at a computer all day. Stepping away from a sterile office might lead to a little bit of danger, odd shift hours, and outdoor exposure. Many young adults do not want to be confined after having just spent 12 years in high school. They vow to find a job wherein they can breathe and have some autonomy. The fact is that there are a large number of multifaceted positions in a plethora of industries that pay well and have many expected job openings. In most instances, a Bachelor’s degree is not required. If this sounds good to you, read on.

Construction
As the economy has bounced back, construction has also rebounded. There are job demands for builders and related helpers. Brick masons, stonemasons, construction manager, and laborers are a few titles to consider.

Healthcare
There is plenty of opportunity to find a career in healthcare that enables you to move about and have a variety of interactions during the day. Here are a few to consider: Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Dental Hygienist, Sonographer, Radiology Technician, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapy Assistant and Phlebotomist.

Engineering
Technicians calibrate machine and study and improve manufacturing processes. While a formal education is required, the worker will take direction from engineers. Specializations in this field are mechanical, industrial and electromechanical engineering technicians.

Repair and Maintenance
People who know how to repair equipment are essential to keeping things going. If you are great with engines and machines consider often overlooked occupations such as elevator repair, avionic technician, boilermaker, power line repair, wind turbine technician and track switch repair.

Oil
For some people the oil industry is attractive because the jobs are outside, far away and pay very well. As mentioned in the introduction, this is the type of non-desk job that is not for the faint of heart. Rotary drill operator jobs are on the increase and pay close to $25 per hour.

Military
For those who like travel, learning on the job, and a huge amount of career choices, the military is a good option. Think about all of the branches from which you can choose. Pay and benefits are great. The drawback of course, is the chance of getting hurt.

Miscellaneous
Here a few fun jobs that you may not have known about. Solar panel installers work on residential as well as large commercial projects. As the green industry grows, so does the demand for solar workers. Locksmiths work for companies or have their own business. Hours can be unpredictable as customers could need help at any hour. Massage therapists meet new people every day. Massage is a service that is evergreen. Fitness instructors and personal trainers are also in an evergreen industry. When people can afford it, they will pay to look good. Instructors can freelance and have their own businesses.

There are at least 100 more attractive occupations that do not require an eight hour stint in an office every day. Check the Bureau of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook for descriptions and education requirements for every job title that you can think of.
